Saqqara

The graveyard extends close to the antique town Memphis. It is called Sakkara. Although the architect Imhotep didn't think of building a pyramid at all the most famous building is the step pyramid of Djoser. He wanted to construct a quadratic Mastaba for Djoser. Afterwards it crossed his mind to enlarge the building in five more stages of working to a pyramid with altogether six steps. The steps were suggested to enable the pharaoh the ascension into heaven. So that could get to his real father - the god of the sun - re.

the step pyramid of the Pharaoh Djoser

We ourselves get to the Unas pyramid via a step-up after we passed the ticket counter. This pyramid is that little that it isn't noticed as a pyramid by most of the visitors at all.
Much more impressive are the first roofs made out of stone, which are today still borne by pillars of stone. Probably, the stonemasons based the stone on the archetype of at that time commonly used building materials: the pillars as tree trunks, the roof out of stone as thatched roof. But in doing so they weren’t able to build free-standing pillars, so that every pillar is connected with the outer wall by one side.

Due to the fact that Sakkara doesn’t belong to the conventional program of one day excursions and that only a few tourists stay overnight at Cairo, it’s very calm there, except for a couple of watchmen and some guys who hang around and hope for a little tip. While I hope, that we won’t attract another group of beggars by giving money to the watchmen, our tour guide declares that they don’t earn much money.

View of Saqqara to Red and Crease pyramid and another picture

In contrast to the Pyramids of  Cheops and Chephren, it is easy to circle the Step Pyramid. On the one hand, the Step Pyramid is, with a base area of 121 to 109 metres, considerably smaller. And on the other hand, the air above Sakkara is drier and far cleaner than the air above Cairo.
Glancing from the wall westward the Pyramid in a northward direction, you may see beyond the Pyramids of Abusir and Sawjet el-Arjan as far as to the plateau of Gisa, while you can see the Crease Pyramid and the Red Pyramid more southerly.
