Obligatory for every journey through Egypt is visiting one of the many bazaars. We did so in Aswan, where we – unoffended by our tour guide – were able to look about. Or rather could be able to. Because, like the market places are the targets of the tourists, we, the tourists, are the targets of the merchants. All the more, when – like in summer - there aren’t many people in the town.

Actually we aren’t able to pass a market stall without being greeted with “Hallo, Mister, Madame…”. Other merchants go up to Annette with one or two dresses to show them to her while she is passing. When one merchant gets impertinent and holds a dress directly out to her body I see red. There might be Egyptian men who think it is all right when others lay their hands on their own women. In this case I suppose the merchant to be glad that I just pushed him aside ruggedly before he toddles off under the laughter of the other merchants.

When we arrived at the end of the clothe-mile we got to know that it wouldn't be profitable if we would go on. A few meters away the scenery changes. While the leading part seems to be somewhat intact and acceptable at the rear part there are only some shabby looking stalls and wagons. If at all, because in between mountains of debris a few chandler offer their fruit and vegetables merely in some baskets. Sometimes only separated from the dust of the streets by clot ship. But the setting fits: partly fallen, partly ripped buildings dominate the backdrop. And one section even looks like after a martially quarrel. And then we get close to a mosque and everything appears much tidier.
