Promenade Swakopmund

Lutheran Church
iin the Lutheran Church

Next morning we stood up early with the plan to discover Swakopmund on foot. Firstly we come to the post street after crossing the school street. On the left hand directness Namib we visit the Protestant church first. The construction of the building started in 1909 like the construction of many other buildings here, too. In 1912 there was its dedication.
Fortunately, it is opened and in good condition today. Inside the church we are received by a neat and at the same time simple adjustment. Splendour can’t be found here but silence while there is a church service is compulsive. Right behind the entry there is a glazed room for parents and their little children.

Villa Wille, the oldest hotel of Swakopmund
German pastries and confectionery taste the Namibian also even today

The Villa Wille (which is called Hotel Eberwein today) is also situated in the post street. It is the oldest hotel in the city. Moreover, the German heritage can’t be ignored in Swakopmund. A few steps further we reach a bakery which invites with delicious confectionery in the seaside resort.  What luck for the Namibian people that the German art of bakery couldn’t be displaced by the British colonists or the South Africans who occupied the South West of Africa. German master craftsman’s diplomas are usual wall hanging in those bakeries.

Hohenzollern-House
Marine monument

On the bottom end of the post street near the light house and the souvenir market there is the monument of the marines. It was uncovered in 1909 and reminds of the marines who died during the Herero and Nama rebellions from 1904 to 1907. We think it is very interesting that the men are listed exactly after their service grades but you can’t find anything about the numerous victims of the African tribes.
