Reptile house at Otavi-Bahn

former station building of the Otavi road
OMEG-Haus

On the corner of Kaiser Wilhelm Straße and Windhoeker Straße we get to the OMEG-house and the station building of the former Otavi mines and railway company (of it is derived the abbreviation OMEG). While there is a museum with about 2,000 books and a complete newspaper collection of 1898 in the right building till this day, it clocks us in the left building, the reptile's house.

Inside are found beside the different types of snakes in the southwest of Africa a row of pictures which show the partly devastating results of a snakebite. Thus we see the exposures of children whose bodies to over the bite place have completely healed, after the poison has destroyed big parts of the tissue. It is especially dangerous the pouffe vipers because it is sluggish, hardly contrasts on the subsoil and does not flee. If one steps on them, one can only hope to meet the head. Otherwise it bites. In addition, care is offered with the Spei cobras whose poison must be washed immediately out of sight.

At the latest the sidewinder betrays, why Sydney keeps a lookout always anxiously after snakes when a few women require an additional toilet break during the coach journey. It is to be found since in the sand only with quite precise glance.
Again outside, we look the enclosure of the iguanas as well as a gigantic bone. He misses more than seven metres and weighs more than 500 kilogrammes. And, nevertheless, he was for a blue whale only one lower jaw.
