At the lighthouse

row of houses in front of the 21 metre high lighthouse

From almost every place in Swakopmund you can see the lighthouse. It was built in 1902 and risen in 1910 and is the most disputed emblem of the city. But even more: with its colours the lighthouse fascinated Annette, who had once wished to see a red and white striped lighthouse during our holidays in Northern Germany and had to wait until our journey through Namibia.

After we’ve already been at the most popular buildings in Swakopmund at noon, and after we’ve been in several shops and at the post office, we are attracted by the café “Zum Leuchtturmwächter” directly below the lighthouse. Speciality of the restaurant: Black forest cherry cake.  Even we ourselves as people from the South of the Black forest can’t say “no”! Together with a “Café Latte” it’s really delicious.
Honestly, usually we don’t like that quirk to eat dishes of our home country abroad, but ordering a Black forest cherry cake, while sitting below a northern German lighthouse at the coast of Namibia is really something special.

The ground itself is well cared-for, some parakeets are singing in their cages and chicken, ducks and rabbits can move freely on the grass.
Beside this place is quite peaceful and the tables and umbrellas are in such a position so that you have the possibility to choose between sun and shadow.
For us it’s the perfect place to relax and to write some postcards. And of course to watch the weaver birds, that are eating the last rest of cake at the other tables.

Unfortunately this idyll doesn’t rest very long. We’ve just finished the first postcards mist comes up from the sea. One single moment the sun seems to resist the close cloud and briefly has success to solve the clouds over the countryside. But then the humid air is stronger and we’re wrapped in mist.
Currently the temperature falls about ten degrees. And it's really about ten degrees Celsius. Therefore, we are wearing much too thin clothes and would like to change our summer clothes against thick sweaters, long pants and sturdy shoes. Nevertheless, we remain brave and finish all our postcards, before we flee to the museum.
