Quiver Tree Forest
Quiver Tree Forest

The next morning we leave for the south. That means first we travel from the Lodge back to “Mariental” and from there farther over the B 1 to the quiver tree forest. We are lucky. Even when the Namibic landscape is sparse and dry during the winter months, the trees are in flower.

Locally Sydney wants to explain us all important facts about the forest and the quiver trees. As we have to continue our trip in ten minutes, Anette and me walk immediately into the forest. But can we call it forest? The quiver trees are very distributed all over the landscape. However, there are about 300 trees.
Worldwide that is unique. Between the trees there are brusque rocks, which seem to be accumulated manually. That is why the region is also called playground of the giants.

The quiver trees can grow to a height of eight meters and belong to the trees in Namibia, although they are part of the succulents (Aloe dichotoma). They got their name from the Bushmen (San), who used to use the holed branches of the tree as a quiver for their arrows. Today, the trees are under natural conservation all over Namibia.
