A walk at Namib Lodge

Savanna on the edge of the Namib
Savanna scenery and fossilized dune

As additional programme the Namib Desert Lodge offers us a sunset trip to the Namib Naukluft Park. But considering the fact that there is not much to see during the trip (maybe) except some goats, ostriches and small animals, we can do without it. Instead of that we walk to the Petrified Dunes on our own.

Walk to the fossilized dune

The silence of the savannah is wonderful. While the sun is setting, the grass on the reddish sandy soil shines golden. In deeper areas you can find thorn bushes and a huge nest of bayas on one of the deep rooting arcadas. This nest seems to be left though. The only mentionable discovery we get to see are some traces of antelopes which are used to pass this area night by night in order to find something to drink at the waterhole.

The path to the Petrified Dunes is easy to walk. Only the flies accompanying us during the whole walk are getting on my nerves. However... it's nice to walk along the grass whilst being together with someone else. We wonder if there might be any snakes or scorpions. Although we don't know it we aren't afraid and calm ourselves with the fact that if there were any, they would have either ran away when the bottom had erupted or they are hiding under stones.

Savannah

Having reached the Dunes we take the path to a place some meters below the top. We walk along an offshot wishing to see some grazing Oryxes. This hope is not to be fulfilled though. But still we enjoy the savannah and the African landscape. And the sun? It sets here also.
