Hoba Meteorite

one of many endlessly straight streets
children

After we cross Tsumeb at the midday, we stop next at the Hoba meteorite. On the way from the bus to the meteorite we can imagine ourselves, how big the about 55 metric tons lump is. Since so immensely the meteorite may be, one reckons on a density of something about as eight grammes per cubic centimetre, the stone shrivels mentally already on 7 cubic metres. Thus the Hoba meteorite is only one metre really thick and has a surface diameter of only just three metres. And, nevertheless, it is the probably second largest meteorite of the world.

When the meteorite was discovered in the 20s on the farm Hoba west, one would have taken away him with pleasure. Now, nevertheless, however, 55 metric tons cannot be got rid of so easily - especially, if there not even are well surfaced streets in the surroundings. However, for it the finding place has developed with the time to a popular place of interest. The ground was dug away and created all around the meteorite a kind of small amphitheatre.
In the end, after the development with toilets and grill places it was in the time to put up a sign which warns about falling down meteorites. Should you hear a strange noise far on top in the sky, spit best of all fast on the ground, so that the meteorite can fall in the water...
