frequently asked questions

At which season were we in Namibia?
Beginning till the middle of July, so in the middle of Namibian winter.

Are Travellerchecks an advantage?
No. At the airport one should exchange enough money to come with a tour about the Fish River canyon to Swakopmund. In our case we changed 150 euros. They would also have reached up to the end of the rices if we have strictly paid with visas. Indeed, the pipelines in the country are bad partly, however, the figures with card were still possible in every Lodge.

What´s about malaria?
Namibia consists almost only of semi-desert and desert, Etosha is a salt pan. All this may be a poor habitat for mosquitoes. But there are snakes that pose a real risk. So don’t go behind a bush to tinkle.

What camera did we have, besides?
The Canon Eos 400D with the objective Efs 17-85 mms belonged to the equipment and a telephoto with 70 up to 300 mms and picture stabilizer (the camera has a lengthening factor of 1.6, corresponds up to 480 mms of focal length). It was worth it, because even if the animals are rather close partly, with a telephoto they are first.
Sense does a Polfilter to get more colour in the sky. Nevertheless, a UV filter or Skylight is more importantly. Quite only to protect the lens against mud and fat. We had dust not really so much. Exception is the dune No. 45 on which is not to be thought of a change (camera in the bag and take it out only for photo). With the landscapes many have pioctures really originated after 10 o'clock. However, the nicest ones, like with the walk to the fossilized dune, have originated in the late afternoon. The pictures in the Sossusvlei, with the quiver tree forest, on the Epako Game-Drive-Lodge, in the Kalahari, in the Fish River Canon have been taken up mostly early in the morning or about evening.

Power/tension?
There are outlets in all Lodges. Partly it is enough to cancel the barrier with a thin ballpoint pen to be able to charge the accumulators, partly there are adequate adaptors in the room. In the other cases one can borrow in the adoption a suitable adaptor (unfortunately, my world adaptor did not fit). I would not take an adaptor, therefore, any more. In the case of doubt you can buy one in the hotel. Then it fits at least guaranteed. We had no problems with the voltage.

How is eating in Namibia?
The breakfast resembles very much the German breakfast. Reason is that the Namibians have grown fond of the German baking art during the short colonial age. Bakeries with master's certificate from Germany are with thus no rarity.
At noon we allowed to fall out mostly to see more and also because eating is plentiful in the evening in common. A speciality of the country are of course wild dishes like Gemsbock (Oryx), Kudu (a little bit chewy) and springbok. Gemsbock and springbok do not taste thus sourichly like our venison. The dinner has cost with us mostly about the 12 euros. A plate dish is about 8 euros.

Which experiences have we done withe the organiser?
Our experiences with Berge & Meer were up to now, actually, always well to very well.
In Namibia is a little problem that it is getting dark in July / August rather early. Thereby it can crunch in the program sometimes a little. Our tour guide has very well solved this, however, as we think.
