Gnus in Etosha National Park

Gnu
more Gnues

I admit that gnus are not really the most beautiful antelopes that live in Namibia. But they are the most remarkable animals that are running through the steppes and savannahs of Africa. The calves only need few seconds to learn how to walk and thereby set the world record for mammals in this discipline. They have to, because if a gnu is out of luck it is hunted by a lion already three minutes after its birth.

Gnu

Even before birth gnus prove that in their lives every second counts: More than 90 per cent of all mating are successful. In comparison lions need some dozen tries to succeed.
The big migration of the gnus is unique also. Shortly before our journey we watched a documentary about the gnus on travelling 3000 kilometres through the Serengeti of Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya. It is live on the run.

Which we experience ourselves in the Ethosha National Park. There are not such huge droves as in the east of Africa there, but the herd instantly gets panic when a lion shows up. In a moment the animals are out of sight. Although we are travelling into the same direction short time later we won’t find this herd anymore.
