Giraffes in Etosha

What am I supposed to write about giraffes? You can find a lot of giraffes in the Etosha. Of course you can find them there. And they are especially beautiful to observe when they come to quench their thirst at the water hole, spreading their legs to either side. What few people know is how they satisfy their need for calcium.
For, after the park was fenced in 1973, and the animals could not follow their migration routes anymore, they became completely dependent on what is offered within the boundaries of the park. This leads to a shortage of calcium due to which for example elephants can only grow very small tusks.

Giraffes however try to solve the problem by chewing on bones, which looks quite a lot like they want to sing. Over and over they jerk their snout up into the air in order to be able to clench the bone in between their teeth a little better, then gazing straight ahead with an open mouth again in the next instant. It is an absolutely hilarious behaviour creating a lot of amusement in the bus. After all, we are all not aware of the fact that the giraffe is only trying to help itself out of its miserable situation.
