Travelogue Costa Rica

Tortuguero

San Jose has its charm. But if you aren’t interested in the treasure you can find in the museums and if it isn’t possible to you to look beyond the backdrop (or you donut want to take the risk), the sights of the city will go out. So we were happy when we start our trip to Tortugueru at the third day and drive to the Caribbean coast.

Drive through a flooded landscape

After driving through the mountains, past the national park Braulio Carillo and through a few hard rain showers, we arrive at the platform of Limon. Although we sit in an air-conditioned bus, we notice that it gets slowly warmer: Even more when we take a stopover for an unexpected second breakfast in the restaurant Selva Tropical (near to Guapiles).  After the two poor slices of toast in the Gran Hotel a nice surprise. As the small enclosure behind the restaurant, were some butterflies live.

Flood in Tortuguero
ride through the rainforest to Tortuguero

When we drive on finally, our tourist guide explains to us, that we leave the bus in another place as it was planned. Because we should actually drive across the big canal through the rain forest and the national park of Tortuguero or rather to Beach Lodge.
Because it has continuously rained during the last days, there is a flood. This happens two up to three times in the year. This is too rare, as that one could expect a reasonable street to the spare pier. „The way is not made for so many buses” apologised Eloy before it goes over hill and dale.

Tree workers trying to get the water flow free.

We must carry our package the last 50 meter to the pier. Then we pack all in big bags and ship it onto the first boat. We ourselves get into another boat.

Indeed that’s a little bit troublesome, but the following journey over the usually small tills and flooded ways, past the fields, fence and plantations is worthwhile.

Moreover we have luck, that our boat is so low. Other vacationers are driven among a lower bridge through, before they can ship their right boat.

Floods in Tortuguero.
finally, in the Tortuguero Canal
???

Our driver must throttle the speed, when it goes in the rain forest. Over and over again branches, floating debris and big boles too, barricade the way. It is a great adventure to drive in the green brush. After a half hour we pass the big canal. It is time to say thanks to our driver.
