El Arenal National Park

On the other side of the lava flow we go through a part with fanes and many others of the pioneer plant and this part is not destroyed by the volcano. We are in a totally different world. Here the trees grow very close and on their limbs there are epiphytes which fight with bogs and lichen for enough sunlight. It’s much more humid air and on the way there are some puddles.
This way is called ‘Los Tucanes’ and goes 2km through the forest and at the end a different way called ‘El Pilon’ which is 2,5km long goes back to the lava flow. Up from the parking area, it’s a way with 8,5km, which is too long to go in this humid-warm air. And because of this we turn back after 1km but on this short part of just 1km it happened nothing new and the way doesn’t change much.

Further we want to go through the ‘Heliconia-Way’. It goes from the higher parking area to the slower. This way has its name from the many Helicons, which grow here and which are very beautiful when they prosper. Yes, but that’s the pre-condition.
Unfortunately, we arrive at the wrong time (30th December). The bromelain- and tillandsia-overgrown trees are nevertheless nice to look at, like the magpie-crow who deals with the window of a jeep at the lower parking area.
