For the afternoon we plan to go boating on the Arenal-Lake. It’s only a few kilometers till the dam wall and the next pier. Locally, we find out that one should have organized this before, because on the one hand there are only few boats (and few possibilities for parking) and on the other hand we can’t find out how and when the boats take off. Only a man comes to us who offers a drive for 70 USD. Maybe he has to ask for this when he has only two guests. However, we don’t want to strain our budget so much – especially because the volcano hides more and more behind the clouds so we can pretty easily watch the lake from the riverside.
Even the continuation of our drive to a supposed second pier doesn’t lead to success. The landscape is wonderful and high trees provide shade for the street. We even find one single coati, who just runs off, as Annette is ready with her camera (“Such a jerk!”). But then we arrive at the end of a traffic jam. Or are these cars only parking? It is not so easy to see because there are big gaps between the cars. Only as we continue on, we notice, that part of the street on the other side is missing. Our side is meanwhile blocked by construction vehicles. Later we learn that the day before a jeep along with the road plunged 20 meters into the depth. Good that nobody at home has heard of it.
We are fortunate however on our trip back to La Fortuna. How you can best notice where there are sloths? That there is already another car on the roadside and they are all staring up into the trees. And really, far above us hangs a three-toed sloth, which is hanging upside down, to scratch himself gleefully with both hands on the head. We are thrilled!
