Again out of doors we come around at the main post office and next across the Avenida 1, the Calle 7 and the Avenida Central to the Place of Democracy. Suitably: The old barracks of the town sit above the place. Because however the military was abolished by the president in 1949 (thereby he had no longer be afraid of a military coup) here is meanwhile accommodate the National Museum of Costa Rica. The place itself is first of all popular with the Youth. They avail themselves of the light slope and wide steps to run riot with their bikes and skateboards.
From the Place of Democracy it is just a few meters to the National park, the major park of the inner city, in which scores of several trees grows. In this area of the town it is clearly quieter and even the traffic noise make room for the twitter of the birds. Well worth seeing is the monument to the remembrance of the battles in Santa Rosa and Rivas. Furthermore you will find a bust of the national hero Miguel Higaldo.
Only separated by the arts centre (which is located on the area of the former governmental rum-factory), we come to the next park, the Parque Espana and after that to the Parque Morazan. More interesting, however, is the Edificio Metallico. Hardly to see from far away, the building consists of uncountable pieces of metal and offers space for three primary schools today. Like most schools in Costa Rica these are actually financed by the money which is wasted for military in other countries.
